A Study of Physical Fitness Levels of Mentally Handicapped Children and Adolescents in Illinois.
Wang, Peter; Eichstaedt, Carl B.
To determine existing fitness levels of mentally retarded students in Illinois and to establish state fitness norms for mildly retarded, moderately retarded, and Down's syndrome students, 1,548 retarded individuals (4 to 64 years old) were given a seven item special physical fitness test battery. A percentile norm was constructed on all seven items, and comparisons with national norms were undertaken. Results revealed that the mildly retarded Illinois Ss were lower performers on the seven items (bent arm hang, situps, shuttle run, standing long jump, 50 yard dash, softball throw, and 300 yard walk-run) than national norm Ss. Moderately retarded and Down's Ss performed very close to the national norms. Findings suggest the need for increased opportunities for physical fitness of Illinois mildly retarded students. (CL)
