Spoken Words. Technical Report No. 177.
Hall, William S.; And Others
The word frequency lists presented in this publication were compiled to create a database for further research into vocabulary use, especially the variation in vocabulary due to differences in situation and social group membership. Taken from the natural conversations of 40 target children (four and a half to five years old) with their families, friends, teachers, and preschool classmates, the word lists are offered according to socioeconomic status and race: white middle class, black middle class, white working class, and black working class. The frequency information for each word is broken down according to the category of the speaker (target child, other children, adults, and experimenter) and situation (home, school, and transition). An explanation of the project, its design, and the procedures used to compile the word lists are offered in an introduction. (RL)
