Vocational Education in West Germany.

This report describes vocational education in West Germany from a Canadian viewpoint. Chapter 1 discusses education in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1949, including findings and govermental agencies/departments. A resume of the school system is provided in chapter 2. It covers kindergarten and preschool facilities, primary school, three secondary school options, the comprehensive school, and schools for the handicapped. Chapter 3 is a closer look at vocational schools--year of basic vocational training, part-time and full-time schools, higher commercial school, vocational extension schools, technical secondary schools, vocational gymnasium, and technical school. The discusson of vocational training outside the schools in chapter 4 focuses on its history, training places and personnel, trainee placement, training contracts, examinations, and qualifications upon completion. Summaries of interviews, school visits, and factory visitations compose the second third of this report. Appendixes, comprising the final third, include the educational structure in the Federal Republic, contents of curriculums for teacher training, sample schedules for schools/courses, and a summary outline on vocational education in West Germany by Winfried E. Gass, Vice Principal of the Baden School for Painters, Decorators, and Car Sprayers. (YLB)
