Minigrant Program for the Academically Gifted--Phase III. E.S.E.A. Title IV-C. Final Evaluation Report, 1979-1980.
District of Columbia Public Schools, Washington, DC. Div. of Research, Planning and Evaluation.
The Minigrant Program for the Academically Gifted was established to provide the necessary support and instructional challenges to disadvantaged minority students capable of superior academic performance. During the 1979-1980 school year, 500 gifted or talented elementary and junior high school students were served. Additional program components included screening and identifying qualifying students and staff development. The Minigrant Program was evaluated according to a model which called for the comparison of stated objectives to actual outcomes. Findings indicated that screening was accomplished as planned. Staff development sessions were held monthly and were considered helpful by 96 percent of participating teachers. Standardized measures of the academic achievement of a sample of participating students indicated higher post-test percentile rankings than pre-test. Samples of relevant program documents and evaluative data are appended. (MK)
