Applying Problem Solving to Statistics and the Metric System.
Whitman, Nancy C.
This document is one example of a Selected Mathematics Applications (Level B) course. According to the Hawaii State Department of Education's guidelines, a Level B course has learner objectives that are designed to maintain and extend a student's basic skills through applications of mathematics in a variety of "real-life" situations. The focus of this course is on problem solving skills and their application to topics in metric measurement and statistics. This sample course consists of two parts. Part one discusses the approach used to develop this course and provides a brief description of alternative materials and resources. Part two presents an overview of the program and a detailed teacher commentary with emphasis on a problem solving approach to statistics and metric measurement. Masters for fact and worksheets and quizzes and a unit test designed to fit the outlined teaching guide are provided. (MP)
