Intended for use by administrators, teachers, and district and state personnel, this guide provides a framework for Hawaii's kindergarten through grade 12 language arts program. Various sections of the guide contain (1) a statement of beliefs concerning the nature of language, language and learning, the student, and the school climate; (2) program goals and objectives, including learner outcomes and performance expectations in oral communication, reading, writing, language study, and literature for grades three, six, eight, ten, and twelve; (3) a discussion of the scholarly developments in all disciplines involved with the study of language and language use; (4) a discussion of what aspects of each area of emphasis (oral communication, reading, writing, literature, and language study) should be taught at the elementary, upper elementary, intermediate, and high school levels; and (5) a discussion of program development and implementation.
