Degrees Awarded in the Nation and the South, 1977-78.
Smartt, Steven H.
Data and descriptive analyses concerning degrees awarded in the U.S. and the South in 1977-78 are presented, based on National Center for Education Statistics information. One extensive table shows, for the United States, the Southern Regional Education Board region, and each of the southern states, the total number of degrees awarded at the bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and first-professional levels for each academic field included in the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) taxonomy. A second extensive table similarly displays data on associate degrees according to HEGIS categories for arts and science programs and the HEGIS categories for arts and science programs and the technologies. Both tables further refine these totals according to the sex of degree recipients and the control of the granting institution. National trends in degree production from the period 1969-78 are also addressed. The decline in doctoral production began in 1973-74 nationally and in 1976-77 in the South. Master's level growth declined in 1977-78, and bachelor's degree production has moved from moderate growth in the early 1970s to a definite leveling in the last several years. (SW)
