This guide provides a sequence for studying the communication arts in grades one through six. Prepared by the Lancaster (Pennsylvania) school district, the guide organizes communication skills within and across grade levels. The skills are listed in two ways so that teachers may use whichever list best accommodates their individual teaching styles. One form indicates both a horizontal and vertical progression of skills so that teachers can determine entry and exit levels of skills and can see the progression of difficulty from one level to the next. The second form of the skills list is a vertical progression of skills by level and category only. Skill numbering on this second list corresponds to the numbering on the first list. Readiness skills for preschool and kindergarten are listed separately in developmental sequence and by category, because they do not correspond to the skills in levels one through six. An "activities guide" provides suggested teaching strategies and student activities for specific skills, including listening, oral expression, handwriting, phonics, written language, the dictionary, vocabulary development, spelling, locating, organizing, analyzing, and reading. The final section contains the skill acquisition measures for level six, which are intended as examples of the ways to measure student mastery of the specific communication skills. (RL)
