A Multitrait-Multimethod Matrix for Self-Perceptions: Implications for Discriminant Validity.
Soares, Louise M.; Soares, Anthony T.
Nine different self scales, along with the corresponding ratings on the same traits by peers and adults, were administered to children and adolescents. With a multitrait-multimethod matrix formulation, the results indicated general differentiation on the nine scales, suggesting situation-dependent and divergent self-pictures. Interpersonal congruence was found most often between self-perceptions and peer-perceptions. Results of discriminant analysis yielded distinct separation of group centroids (grades and gender) on all factors. Further nomological research in self concept would seem to require greater emphasis on creative theory-construction. (Author)
