This inservice guide for elementary school teachers provides a competency based nutrition course to be used to increase parent/community participation in nutrition education activities and to lead parents toward providing better nutrition for themselves and their children. The curriculum is presented in six lessons which cover the following topics: the nutritional needs of children and adults; food choices and health; consumer awareness of the nutritional food supply value; factors influencing food choices; components and purpose of the Type "A" school lunch; and review of nine popular fad diets. Each lesson is elaborated in terms of instructions, objectives, supplemental materials, contents, activities, and suggestions for evaluation. Appendices provide over 20 handouts items; a sample parent/community agenda, a sample work shop survey, guidelines for producing a newletter, and supplementary lesson plan activities. (Author/MP)
