The purpose of this guide is to provide background information on the ethnic Chinese refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos that will be of interest and use to educators working with these refugees. The guide consists of four sections: (1) a brief history of the Chinese communities in Southeast Asia; (2) a more detailed discussion of the Chinese in Vietnam, and the events leading to the massive exodus of ethnic Chinese from Vietnam in the spring and summer of 1979; (3) an account of education in the Chinese communities in Indochina, and the ramifications for education for the ethnic Chinese refugees in the U.S.; and (4) a brief, annotated bibliography of books and articles on the subject.
