White Racists in America: We Have Met Them and They Are Us.
Wayson, William W.
The atmosphere of racism in America affects the attitudes and behavior of both blacks and whites. Our racial outlook is profoundly influenced by the history of black slavery which dehumanized blacks and caused them to engage in behavior that could be used as "proof" of inferiority. Even today, a century after slavery was abolished, the doctrine of inferiority is reinforced by separating black people from our institutions and our lives. Much of the racism that blacks encounter in our society is unconscious but permeates daily life. A number of anecdotes provided in this paper illustrate the frequency of (often unconscious) racist attitudes and practices. The educational system itself perpetuates segregation, thus perpetuating the ideology and practices that supported slavery. Racism in the schools is illustrated by studies in which teachers were found to have false perceptions of black students' knowledge and learning abilities. In order to break the cycle of racist attitudes and behavior, individuals must become aware of the subtle ways that the cycle is reinforced by seemingly insignificant, often innocent individual decisions and actions.
