Foundations for the Future: The Burlington Public Library and the Community It Serves.
Beck, Marjorie; Zack, Daniel
In order to assess community information needs and determine how the Burlington Public Library could plan to meet these needs, a community analysis project was undertaken. Specific objectives of the study were to: (1) prepare a descriptive statistical profile of the community; (2) describe the community environment, lifestyle, and information needs; (3) determine how well the library satisfies information needs; (4) examine ways in which the community can aid the library; and (5) propose changes in library services to more fully meet community needs. A community profile was compiled which examined Burlington's history, geographic setting, population, economics, government, and social and information resources, largely through analysis and synthesis of previously published statistical data. The library was examined in terms of its resources, services, and users. In addition, trends in library financial support were analyzed and compared with other Iowa cities of similar size. The community and library profiles led to a series of recommendations by the project team for library development through increased funding, better facilities, expansion of the library collection, and increased visibility of library services to the community.
