The Developmental Process in the Bilingual Immigrant Adolescent's Identity Search.
Arredondo-Dowd, Patricia M.
Descriptive data from the first three years of a five year longitudinal study of immigrant adolescents are presented in this report. The 30 bilingual students studied represent 20 countries and 13 languages. Students were administered the Self-Description Blank which measures the ratio of success to failure on an Eriksonian task of identity versus identity confusion. Data suggested that during the past three years, students exhibited steady and positive growth. Differences within the group, however, required analyses of individual cases. These analyses are presented in this report. The data are viewed as providing a baseline for theory building for normative research about the identity development process of bilingual immigrant adolescents. Tables of data are appended.
