Competency-Based Teacher Education Project Focusing on the Directed Teaching Experience. Final Report, February 1, 1976 through March 4, 1977.

This report describes the major aspects of a University of Michigan project, "Competency-Based Teacher Education Focusing on the Directed Teaching Experience," and presents results of the first semester's experience with a newly developed assessment model. The primary goals of the project were: (1) to develop an assessment system which would provide each preservice student with periodic evaluation of progress made in acquiring the needed competencies for successful teaching; (2) to develop an assessment system which would provide the various specialized programs within teacher education with data indicating the level of student progress in aquiring the needed competencies for successful teaching; and (3) to develop and field test a variety of mini-models for assessment and instruction which would aid students in the attainment of various competencies and provide them with additional information about their progress. Conclusions drawn from the study emphasize the importance of adapting the competency-based teacher education program to the institution, self-assessment and other evaluative measures, and the involvement of educational personnel in cooperating school districts.
