Table Toys: A Creative Curriculum for Early Childhood.
Creative Associates, Inc., Washington, DC.
This Early Childhood Curriculum Manual, one of four manuals based on approaches developed in the research and demonstration program, "Celebration in Learning '76" (CIL), was designed for adults who work with young children and who wish to expand children's use of table toys in the classroom. The first chapter explores what is meant by "table toys" and outlines some of the problems teachers commonly face in using table toys in the classroom. Chapters Two and Three consider the impact of the physical environment on children's behavior and ability to learn and offer practical suggestions for arranging furniture and displaying materials in the table toy area. The teacher's role in encouraging and structuring the use of table toys is examined in Chapters Four and Five. Toys which are typically found in early childhood classrooms are discussed and specific activities are suggested for each one. The last chapter contains instructions for making toys and discusses the value and implications of teacher-made materials. An annotated bibliography of articles and books on table toys is included in the appendix. (Author/MP)
