Project REACH: A Competency-Based Manual for Camp Director Training. Appendix T. Camp Director Training Series.
Vinton, Dennis A., Ed.; Farley, Elizabeth M., Ed.
Resulting from a 3 year project to develop and test competency based programs for camp personnel serving the physically handicapped, the document contains a manual for training the camp director. An introductory section gives an explanation of competency based instruction, a description of a module, and an overview of the camp director training program. The remainder of the document is divided into nine training modules (sample unit topics in parentheses): orientation to organized camping (philosophy, goals, and objectives of camping); knowlege of campers (classifications and characteristics, attitudes toward the disabled, and assessment and placement); development of a plan for all camp operations (organizational structure; facility design and management, and evaluation and quality control); maintenance of camp facilities and properties; internal and external communication of camp operations (responsibilites of the camp director, boards and committees, meetings, public relations, and fund raising); health and safety (policies and procedures regarding safety and health supervision); management of camp business and finance; provision of camping services and experiences to persons with physical handicaps (recruitment of campers and staff, staff training and supervision, and evaluation and reporting of results); and professional development of camp personnel. Included within each module are an introduction and directions section, a performance objectives checklist, and pre- or posttests (for all but two modules). A glossary of terms concludes the document. (SBH)
