Feminist Criticism: A Background.
Gillespie, Patti P.
A review of the history of criticism applied to the arts, literature, and drama is provided in this paper and related to the need for feminist criticism. The differences of critical opinion as to whether art should reproduce life or stand on its own are discussed. The paper notes that the role and nature of art and artists have been continuously reexamined and so too must the relationship of critics to art criticism be reexamined. It is suggested that the issues remain controversial, but that there is growing awareness by some that women artists and critics have not always been welcome in the worlds of academic and professional theatre and that their art and scholarship have not always been considered and evaluated on their own merits.
