Some Future Directions in Writing Research.
A brief review of the state of the art of writing research suggests several areas in which future research could be profitable. These areas include: (1) extended use of individual case studies as a source of insight to the creative process, perhaps gathered together by a bibliographical center for classifying and indexing to demonstrate the variety of approaches to the composition of case studies and to establish an empirical base for properly grounded theories; (2) surveys and questionnaires implemented by participant observers to bring understanding to conflicts between teacher and student expectations; (3) interventions in the school routine with special tasks to help locate features of the writing process suitable for further study; (4) increased awareness of theories that underlie assumptions in the field of research on composing; and (5) reliance on a sense of audience and on publications to both communicate current research results and stimulate new research activity.
