Unified Technical Concepts. Module 5: Resistance.

This concept module on resistance is one of thirteen modules that provide a flexible, laboratory-based physics instructional package designed to meet the specialized needs of students in two-year, postsecondary technical schools. Each of the thirteen concept modules discusses a single physics concept and how it is applied to each energy system. This module discusses (1) the phenomenon referred to in a general way as resistance and (2) the application of the concept of resistance to mechanical, fluidal, electrical, and thermal systems. Included with the concept module are nineteen application modules that discuss a specific application of a single concept in a single energy system, and contain a student laboratory exercise. Laboratory modules included are Static and Sliding Friction; Effect of Lubricants; Rolling Friction; Laminar and Turbulent Flow; Viscosity; Fluid Resistance in Pipes; Valves and Regulators; Shock Absorbers; Drag-Resistance to Motion through Fluids; Ohm's Law; Series and Parallel Resistors; Internal Resistance of a Battery; Conductors, Semiconductors, and Insulators; Resistance of Wires; Resistance of Semiconductor Junctions; Resistance of Gas Laser Tubes; Volt-Ohm Milliammeter; Thermal Conductivity; and Heat Flow through Insulation.
