Collective Bargaining and University Governance. AIR Forum 1980 Paper.
The effects of trade union membership on faculty attitude toward university governance are analyzed with attention directed to faculty concepts of the university as an employer. An attempt is made to forecast the inevitable consequences of the growth of academic trade union activity, the factors that influence that growth, and the shift in emphasis from traditional collective bargaining areas to more fundamental issues of university governance. Different attitudes toward university governance in North America, Britain and Ireland, and Continental Europe are considered. The relevance of the traditional aims and objectives of unionized labor in industry, and the ways they have sought to achieve these aims in the university environment are also assessed. (SW)
