This is the first of four instructional volumes designed for the intermediate-advanced student of Egyptian Arabic. The course deals with the language, culture, customs, and traditions of Egypt. The present volume consists of five parts. Part One, "William and Marcia," comprises seven units. Each unit is formed of three parts: conversation, text, and cultural notes. The conversations deal with language and culture. The characters are two Egyptian families and two American families. Part Two, "Cultural Texts," contains 50 texts covering a wide range of topics. All materials in Parts One and Two appear in phonetic transcription, with an almost-idiomatic translation. Part Three is an appendix, including various tables and charts for quick reference. Part Four explains the system of transcription. Part Five is a vocabulary list. (Author/JB)
