Essential Competencies of Teachers of the Gifted.

A study to determine needed competencies of teachers of intellectually gifted students was begun with a compilation of 751 competency statements from the literature of general and special education and interviews with parents and teachers of gifted students. Critiquing and refining efforts produced a list of 111 competencies stated in behavioral terms. Statements were then incorporated into a rating instrument and sent to 67 nationally recognized experts for content validation. The final list of 87 competencies are listed under the following categories: professional knowledge and development; communication with parents, colleagues, and community; assessment of student needs; management skills; learning environment; instructional skills; individualized curricula; goal setting; use of learning resources; evaluation of student progress; and advising skills.
