Oygarden, Sverre; Svartdal, Olav
This case study focuses on the Forsokgymnaset, Oslo, (FGO), Norway, which came into being as a new type of school without any influence from lifelong education but whose features, especially the emphasis on students' responsibility for their own growth, are applicable to lifelong learning. Chapter 1, an introduction to lifelong education, considers its rationale, key principles, administrative practices, pedagogical methods, and teachers' role. Chapter 2 briefly describes the country (Norway) by focusing on its most typical qualities and comparing it with other nations. A discussion of the FGO in chapter 3 places it within the Norwegian school system. Chapter 4 briefly outlines the plan, procedure, and objectives of this study. Chapter 5 presents results of the study--a description and analysis of FGO. These topics are discussed: process of setting goals, formal structure, internal milieu, managerial subsystem, social subsystem, and pedagogical subsystem. Chapter 6 is a postscript addressing these topics: FGO pupils and teachers, financial situation, school leavers, and the "Hawthorne Effect." (YLB)
