A Bibliographic Guide to Functional Literacy.
Northwest Regional Education Lab., Portland, OR. Clearinghouse for Applied Performance Testing.
The primary purpose of this bibliography is to stimulate active communication of research needs and findings among researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers concerned with adult functional literacy. By topically arranging and briefly annotating significant research articles on functional literacy, this Guide introduces some of the major issues in literacy research. Generally, articles are non-technical so as to make research accessible to the non-specialist. The Guide is divided into five major chapters, each focusing on a specific topic: Literacy Policy; Definitions and Measurements; Adult Literacy Education, Determining Literacy Requirements, and, Consequences of Literacy. The chapters begin with brief overviews of major issues, Articles and books are then cited and annotated, describing how material covered in each selection fits into the topical focus of the chapter.
