Facilitator's Manual: Summer Transitions. 2nd Edition, 1980.
Scherer, Charlotte L., Ed.
This teacher handbook provides guidelines and materials for graduate students who prepare entering freshmen at Bowling Green State University for the rigors of academic life. A series of exercises show summer instructors, called "facilitators," how to get students to: map their environment, use local resources, read and mark textbooks, study and train the memory, listen effectively to professors and lecturers, review for examinations, write effectively, manage time, solve personal problems, handle academic issues responsibly, and bridge the gap between the world of self and the world of knowledge. Through class activities, assignments, field trips, and a special emphasis on developing study skills, students learn how to function in an academically challenging environment and plan for their own growth and development. Facilitators are often paired with interns drawn from area high schools to allow a team teaching experience with a group of entering freshmen. Grading guidelines and suggestions for session planning and coordination are included. Students are also encouraged to keep a journal of their experiences. An appendix lists resource persons and support services available to both facilitators and students in the Bowling Green area. (DC)
