A handbook for workshop leaders of the Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. (LVA), is presented. The leaders present LVA's Tutor Training workshops. Contents concern the following: qualifications required of workshop leaders; the needs of workshop trainees and methods to meet their needs; the basic tools that the workshop leader must understand before conducting a workshop; the workshop leader's team and the duties that may be delegated by the leader to the team; tasks the workshop leader should perform when planning a workshop; the manner in which continuity leads to the better job; things to remember when demonstrating techniques for the trainees; the suggested technique used for demonstrating the "experience story,""sight words,""phonics," and "word patterns"; three of the 12 creative wall displays that LVA affiliates are using and recommend; procedures affiliate leaders use to promote motivation and insure high interest in their trainees; the advantages and disadvantages of using demonstration students; the procedures used by workshop leaders who utilize demonstration students; the ways some workshop leaders have used guest speakers; tasks recommended as followup activities, a resource for planning and drawing up the contract for the workshop; five recommendations for planning and implementing the contract workshop (or special job); perspectives about personality problems in a workshop; dealing with a trainee who argues with every technique or dominates; and self-evaluation.
