An Interim Report on the Statewide Assessment of Incidents of Violence, Vandalism and Drug Abuse in the Public School, September 1, 1979 to November 30, 1979.
Price, Lynn, Ed.
This report is a preliminary review of violence, vandalism, and drug abuse data submitted to the New Jersey Department of Education by its school districts. The purpose of the report is to present an empirical data base on crime and disruption in the schools that was previously unavailable, and to provide information to assist the department in identifying areas of critical need and targeting programs and resources to meet those needs. To assess the quality and quantity of data reported to the department between April 1, 1979 and June 30, 1979, all incident report forms were keypunched and computer analyzed. The incidents are reported here in numerous tables that describe location, time, type of incident, and the age and sex of perpetrators and victims. The tables also report injuries resulting from such incidents, and what actions were taken in response to the incidents. Included in the tables are vandalism costs and an incident index based on enrollment by community type and district socioeconomic status. (Author/LD)
