Perspectives on Middle School Research.

This monograph was designed to evaluate current research in the middle school area and to assess the state of this research and its impact on practitioners. The lead article concerns the status of middle school research. It offers a discussion of flaws in much of past research, including problems of inconclusive results, low technical quality, questionable variables, improper treatment of correlational relationships, and inappropriate measurement of variables and treatment of data. Four reaction papers to the lead paper follow, written by a curriculum developer, an instructional strategist, a curriculum administrator, and a teacher educator. The four papers, complete with abstracts and bibliographies, comment on research and action needed now in middle school research. (Author/LD)
