A Merging of Disciplines: Intercultural Communication and Health Science.
Berry, Elizabeth B.; And Others
Pointing out the large number of immigrants to the United States from various cultural backgrounds and the large minority population that already exists in the U. S., this paper argues that there is an urgent need for health service workers to have sound preparation in intercultural and interpersonal communication. The paper discusses the health practitioner's special needs for training in intercultural communication; reviews the literature in intercultural communication, health communication, and intercultural health communication; describes a course taught at California State University at Northridge in intercultural communication for health science students; and suggests future directions for this emerging interdisciplinary area.
