International State-of-the-Art Qualitative Ratings: An Overview.
Dordick, Herbert S.
An overview is presented in this paper of the types of qualitative radio and television evaluations currently being undertaken in six countries: Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Great Britain, Japan, and Canada. An introductory section notes the value of qualitative ratings to broadcast policy makers and to those seeking broadcasting changes, and it mentions ongoing efforts to improve the quality of qualitative evaluations. The overview of the status of qualitative evaluation in the countries under discussion presents information on such topics as the way broadcast services are organized, organizations that are responsible for evaluations, the cost of audience measurement, and various instruments used in data collection, including telephone interviews, diaries kept by audiences of their reactions to television and radio, questionnaires, and viewer reaction profiles and indices. A table is included that shows the types of information French television viewers are asked to record in television diaries. (GT)
