Getting Behind the Newspaper.
Nebraska State Dept. of Education, Lincoln.
A number of learning center activities designed to help elementary school students learn to read a newspaper intelligently are presented in this guide. Specific activities deal with newspaper vocabulary, using an index, identifying the five "W's" in a news article, editorials, characteristics of various kinds of newspaper cartoons (advertising, single frame, strip, and editorial), reading sports stories, understanding a financial page, reading want ads, identifying weather map symbols and weather terminology, identifying various kinds of newspaper photographs (features, news, and picture pages), the features of a women's section of the paper, and identifying different types of entertainment advertised in the entertainment section. Pretests and posttests, learning objectives, suggested teaching approaches, and lists of materials needed for each activity are also provided. In addition, the guide provides a plan for implementing a learning center, a copy of a student progress card, and bibliographies for students and for teachers. (FL)
