Competence Is for Everyone. Unit 1: Different People. Upper Level. (Student Text and Teachers' Edition).
Kent, Martha Whalen; And Others
These materials are part of a four-module series, "Competence Is for Everyone," designed to specify and reduce limitations on the learning and use of skills that people experience because of their sex or race. The series identifies three areas that function to maintain inequalities: the process of making judgments or appraisals; practices of social institutions in education, employment, and the mass media; and legal precedents and historical antecedents. Appraisal is treated as it occurs with respect to group membership, i.e., sex and minority status. This module, written for students at the upper grade-level, examines the appraisal process in American society through activities focused on: (1) identification of person and task appraisals; (2) self-appraisal; and (3) recognition of sexual and racial stereotypes. A teacher's guide with instructions and worksheets accompanies this student text. (Author/HLM)
