This Information Notebook is part of a total packet of learning materials on the heritage of Southern agrarians. It contains primary and secondary source readings and pictures describing the roots of Southern agrarians. It tells the story of people who lived in the rural South before, during, and following the Great Depression of the 1930s. The notebook is divided into eight sections: (1) Slavery, (2) Reconstruction, (3) Sharecropping and Tenancy, (4) Everyday Life, (5) Moving, (6) Southern Tenant Farmers Union, (7) New Deal, and (8) Technology. Some sections are followed by questions for discussion and recommended classroom activities. The notebook format was used to encourage students to include their own additional information, particularly materials that relate to their local settings. (Author/MK)
