This annotated bibliography lists 29 documents which evaluate industry/business-sponsored free or inexpensive materials for the elementary schools. The majority of items listed are articles from periodicals although some books are included; with few exceptions, all were published in the 1970s. The bibliography is organized into three groups: those publications which either favor or criticize the use of free or inexpensive materials; those that provide insight into the selection of purchased materials to meet educational objectives; and those that provide background on the industrial-educational relationship. Recommendations are to survey the extent to which teachers are aware of the controversy over the use of free or inexpensive materials and to develop a workshop to help teachers recognize biased materials and nullify propaganda effects of otherwise useful materials.
