National Science Foundation, Washington, DC. Div. of Science Resources Studies.
Presented are data on State and local government research and development (R&D) expenditures for fiscal year 1977. State agency R&D and R&D plant expenditures are compared graphically for the years 1964, 1968, 1973, and 1977 in both 1977 and constant 1972 dollars, and the trend of State support to R&D is analyzed. A graph of total State agency R&D expenditures by function (health, natural resources, energy, transportation, environment, education, income security and social services, food and other agricultural products, and others) and a table outlining the expenditures of each state is presented. Other tables compare the distribution of State agency R&D expenditures by source of funds, performer, and character of work and describe the distribution of personnel engaged in State R&D activities by type. A review of local government R&D expenditures parallel to the state review is provided. (GS)
