This report contains the findings of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Survey of Scientific and Engineering Expenditures at Universities and Colleges, in Fiscal Year (FY) 1978. Results of a survey are reported from 320 academic institutions with doctoral programs in the sciences and/or engineering. Estimates made by NSF staff for nonrespondents represent 4% of the total academic R&D spending at doctoral universities. The 1972 constant dollars are based on the gross national product (GNP) implicit price deflator. (Author)
