Mathemagenic Activities Program: [Reports on Program Administration].
Smock, Charles D., Ed.
This set of eight papers is related to the Mathemagenic Activities Program (MAP) for early childhood education of the University of Georgia's Follow Through Program. The MAP is based on Piagetian theory and provides sequentially structured sets of curriculum materials and processes that are designed to continually challenge children to learn about the physical and social environments. A practical guide to the MAP, sample by-laws for a policy advisory committee, guidelines for implementing the MAP, a teacher training plan, a program description, and a MAP evaluation study are provided. Also included are a brief historical overview titled, American Society and Children: 1850-1890, and an essay titled, American Indian Education. The practical guide provides an introduction to Follow Through, a discussion of the instructional component, including staff role and curriculum content descriptions, as well as an overview of the noninstructional and program evaluation components of the MAP. The MAP evaluation study of program implementation in first and third grade classrooms in three southern communities suggests that the MAP can be implemented in communities having diverse characteristics.
