How One City Got Parents Involved (Panel Session). Theme Two: The Child, His Parents and His Community.
Benas, Evelyn A.
A preschool program involving parents in such activities as classroom observation, teaching, and group discussions with other parents is described in this paper. The program's goals are to provide healthy growth and development opportunities for children and to strengthen parenting skills. Parents are taught about development and behavior patterns and the importance of nutrition and success in early childhood. They are assisted and encouraged to make the home a learning environment. The program's philosophy and structure are described and summative comments regarding typical reactions to and outcomes of program activities are provided. Evaluation of the program determined that the program is cost effective, elicits continual support from parents, leads to enrollment of siblings, and attracts persons from varying socioeconomic, ethnic, and language backgrounds.
