Development and Implementation of a Pilot Middle School Guidance Program.
Jones, Charles A.
This practicum report describes the development and implementation of a comprehensive pilot middle school guidance program. Staff members reviewed the literature on middle schools in general and guidance programs in specific, explored programs in operation throughout the state of California, and consulted with members from the State Department of Education. Program development included the development of an integrated Core curriculum in language arts and social studies, development of the guidance curricular components to be included with the Core program, inservice planning and training for staff members, development of a Guidance Center, and planning for the development of a Career Center. The Core/guidance components addressed many areas within the vast scope of guidance, but specifically the development of self concept, decision-making skills, study skills, growth and development, career awareness, and leadership potential. The major deterrent to implementation is district programming and staffing limitations resulting from severely reduced state funds due to a new tax limitation law. (Author)
