Food and Nutrition for the 1980's: Moving Ahead. Comprehensive Plan for Implementing the National Food and Human Nutrition Research and Education and Information Programs.
Department of Agriculture, Washington, DC.
This booklet outlines a plan for the delivery of human nutrition research and services, in accord with the 1977 Federal Food and Agriculture Act. Research priorities are identified as: (1) nutritional needs; (2) actual eating habits and their effects on health; (3) factors which shape eating habits; (4) production and distribution of food; (5) effects of government nutrition programs and policies on people's health and nutritional status; and (6) considerations for helping to meet the dietary needs of people in other countries. Current Federal nutrition research programs are described, as are programs for information and education. The agencies or offices responsible for each program are indicated. Also described is the coordination between the Department of Agriculture and other Federal departments in various nutrition related activities. In addition, it is explained how the recent creation of three advisory boards will provide a public participation component to the Department of Agriculture's decision making process. Finally, future nutrition related research and educational objectives are analyzed. Appended to the booklet are tables indicating budget appropriations for different programs from 1978 through 1980.
