Relating Pupil Achievement Gains to Ratings of Secondary Student Teachers' Performance.
Capie, William; And Others
This study investigates the validity of the Teacher Performance Assessment Instruments (TPAI) as they relate to the achievement of pupils taught by student teachers. Five separate instruments compose the TPAI: 1) teaching plans, 2) classroom procedures, 3) interpersonal skills, 4) professional standards, and 5) student perceptions. Participating student teachers prepare an instructional unit plan portfolio, administer a teacher-made pretest to the pupils, teach the unit, and close with a posttest on material taught in the unit. Supervising teachers and college supervisors observe the process, using the TPAI rating scales to reach conclusions. Comparative results of the observations of this study are presented in tabular form and an analysis of the results is presented. (JD)
