Occupational Situs and the Agricultural Labor Market.
Lyson, Thomas A.
Agricultural situs can be applied to the analysis, description, and examination of career lines, occupational families, and opportunity structures in the agricultural sector. A proposed situs classification of three categories, or parallel agricultural career ladders was examined in terms of production agriculture, agribusiness, and agricultural education and research. Results of a survey of 1,362 Black and White male students enrolled in agricultural colleges of Southern land grant universities provided preliminary understanding of background factors and social conditions affecting agricultural situs placement. Allocation of agricultural job roles was related to social background and experiences, and situs expectations appeared to be partially governed by available agricultural curricula. White males in schools chartered in 1862 aimed for production agriculture and agribusiness occupations, whereas Black students in the 1890 schools aimed for agricultural research and education and were disproportionately drawn from rural and low socio-economic backgrounds, suggesting a set of agricultural occupations of critical importance to career aspirations of Blacks in general and particularly lower status Blacks. It was suggested that situs classifications merit examination by rural sociologists. (SB)
