This document consists of a study guide and instructional materials for West Virginia University's telecourse on child development titled "The Growing Years." Included are orientation materials (including course objectives, course materials lists, course requirements), a broadcast schedule for the 30 showings, an assignment sheet, format sheets for real life observations of children at three developmental levels, book report guidelines, a bibliography and course quiz questions. The course study guide provides a brief outline of the content of each film, an indication of textbook chapters coordinate with each film, and study questions. Course objectives are the following: By the end of the course learners should be able to (1) recognize genetic, biological, environmental, and sociocultural influences on development, (2) identify and discuss some of the most important aspects of normal physical, mental, and personality development, (3) relate child development research and theory to real-life situations, (4) recognize the diversity of approaches in child development research and theory, and (5) demonstrate openness and objectivity toward issues, theories, and orientations in child development.
