Handbook on Accreditation. Guidelines for Accreditation by Contract.
National Association of Private, Nontraditional Schools and Colleges, Grand Junction, CO.
Written for the prospective student of a nontraditional educational institution as well as the prospective member institution, this handbook presents an overview of the concept of nontraditional education and the ways the National Association of Private, Nontraditional Schools and Colleges attempts to preserve the quality of that concept through the accreditation process. For the student, it identifies institutional problems relating to accountability in education and the criteria upon which accreditation by the association is based. For the institution, it provides a range of procedures and guidelines for development of improved educational services and results, recognized accreditation, and increased cost-effectiveness. Sections address these topics in detail: objectives and ethics of accreditation; scope and purposes of accreditation; procedures and initial standards for developing an accreditation contract; procedures and culminating standards for the accreditation contract; and developing an action plan. A bilbiography is included. Appendices include: the application eligibility assessment form for the three steps of the accreditation process; the student record checklist; a list of fees and dues; guidelines and questions for interviews conducted by on-site evaluation team members; a form for validity and reliability assessment of policies, procedures, and standards; policy governing requests for reconsideration; the accreditation contract form; and a glossary of terms used in accreditation.
