Gulf Arabic: Intermediate Level.
Qafisheh, Hamdi A.
This Gulf Arabic text is designed for those who want to acquire a conversational tool beyond the basic level; it is also of interest to Arabists, anthropologists, and Arabic dialectologists. The language in this text is used in informal situations by the indigenous populations of the southern coast of the Persian Gulf. The text contains 21 lessons with an active vocabulary of about 1,800 items and a glossary of approximately 7,000 words and expressions. A typical lesson contains the following items: (1) a narrative or a dialog built around a topic of interest; (2) vocabulary in the narrative; (3) additional vocabulary connected with the narrative; (4) grammar explanations; (5) drills which provide practice in using the items in the lesson; and (6) shorter narratives for listening comprehension and reproduction, especially in the last five lessons.
