A Nationwide Survey on Participation of Handicapped Students in Experience-Based Career Education.
Evenson, Jill S.; Cook, Judy Thompson
A national survey of Experience Based Career Education (EBCE) programs was conducted to determine the extent to which one model of a career development program, EBCE, is meeting the needs of handicapped students and to create awareness of this information among educators and program developers. Responses were obtained for 173 programs. Five types of programs emerged: (1) emphasis on the general population, not enrolling special needs students (N=36); (2) emphasis on the general population, enrolling special needs students, handicapped students included (N=46); (3) emphasis on the general population, enrolling special needs students, no handicapped students (N=28); (4) emphasis on special needs students, handicapped students included (N=18); and (5) emphasis on special needs students, no handicapped students (N=45). Special needs students included gifted, disaffected, migrants, poverty level, or youth status offenders. Data were also collected on the kinds of EBCE programs enrolling handicapped students; categories of handicapped students served by EBCE; kinds of community activities involving handicapped students; characteristics of EBCE programs serving the handicapped (such as percentage of handicapped students enrolled, program structure, and staff and student responsibilities); and staff perceptions of EBCE program feasability for serving the handicapped. Findings included that of the 56 EBCE programs serving the handicapped, 70% provide at least some required academic credit for EBCE activities and all had completely individualized curricula. Survey instruments are appended. (SBH)
