Providing Therapeutic Support Services for Emotionally Handicapped Secondary Students Through Cooperation with a Community Agency.
Coberly, Lucille
The school programs of 60 secondary level emotionally handicapped students were supplemented with support services provided through a cooperative program developed between the school system and a drug abuse program. Objectives of the project, titled Special Education Intervention Project, were concerned with modifying students' undesirable behaviors and improving academic achievement. Three counselors were hired to provide therapeutic support services. Based on data from behavior ratings and assessment of achievement, it was found that objectives related to a decrease in aggressive, passive or withdrawn, anxious, immature, and inadequate behaviors were achieved. One objective related to other school behaviors was not met. Four of the six objectives for reading and arithmetic achievement were successfully met. Responses from teachers, parents, and students on attitudes questionnaires were favorable regarding the effect of having counselors in the schools. Appended materials include a behavioral checklist, sample record forms, tables with behavior ratings, and sample questionnaires. (SBH)
