A Guide to Effective Education of the Capable Student.
Beloit Public Schools, WI.
The guide is intended to serve as a basic information resource to the principal and/or classroom teacher pertaining to the nature of the bright and gifted student. Chapter I focuses on general considerations for gifted children with sections on the history of gifted education, definition and identification of the gifted, programs for the gifted, and characteristics of the gifted. Chapter II examines organizational practices for the gifted student. Specific alternatives for gifted and talented children are outlined (including special grouping possibilities, enrichment, acceleration and advanced placement, and placement in special settings). Semiseparation and independent study are discussed, and independent work contracts are briefly considered with sample contract forms given. A final chapter offers suggestions for instructional practices which are general in nature and reflect those characteristics of the gifted student which necessitate qualitatively different experiences.
