Strategies for Implementing a District-Wide Discipline Improvement Program.
Nighswander, James K.
This paper discusses an attempt to improve student discipline in the public schools of Springfield, Illinois. First, it discusses briefly a needs assessment study of staff, citizens, and students. A more extensive discussion is then offered of the objectives of the project and how they were accomplished. Finally, the paper offers a midyear report of progress stating that, at least on a short term basis, some positive changes can be made through an effort to improve discipline. It suggests that a discipline improvement program be done on a large scale, that it be top priority for the district, and that leadership come from the top. (Author/LD)
